Young woman’s costume for church, Tura, Pest county, mid-20th century fashion

In the area around the Hungarian capital there are several villages where folk costumes were still alive in the mid-20th century. One of these villages was Tura, 50 km from Budapest. The late survival of folk costume was also due to the local women’s market activities, whereby the peasant dress served as a quality emblem for their produce. The women’s folk costume of Tura was also related to the peasant costumes of the late flowering around Budapest in that it belonged to the multi-skirt type, which gave a rich appearance. Its most distinctive feature was the peculiar female bonnet. The use of the white embroidered head and shoulder shawl was not unique to its surroundings. Although the fashion was adopted through a nearby village of Boldog, the local patterns were soon adapted to their own taste and became a dominant piece of folk art in their festive attire. The festive dress of the Roman Catholic population was adapted to the church liturgy. The white head-and-shoulders costume shown here was worn exclusively to church on Christmas, Easter and Pentecost, on Carnival Sunday and on the first Sunday of each month. The garments could be varied by wearing a coloured silk shawl with a white sewn headscarf or a white sewn shawl with a coloured silk headscarf. The traditional dress of the women of Tura was rapidly abandoned in the second half of the 20th century, and the rules of dress for different occasions are now only remembered by the oldest women.
